Dear Sir
Would you kindly consider the following for your “Letters” column:
In response to “Unfair Trading: National retail Assn. throws its credibility with its weight” (SBT Tuesday 17/05/2005), firstly let me say this was very good reporting by Mr Brecknell and, if this reporting is accurate, the whole matter is utterly scandalous!
I have watched as this debate has trickled on over a period of time and, hitherto, as a Nanango resident, have kept silent, but it is high time to speak up, not only against the mafia-style abuse of country people (which is becoming more brazen every day), but even more importantly, against the trampling under foot of the commandment to keep the Sabbath day.
The “Lord’s Day” is as basic to our Christian heritage, Constitution, Westminster System, and basis of Law as the sanctity of marriage, life, and personal property. Indeed, if we view the matter from a strictly Constitutional position, it cannot be anything but unlawful to trade on the Lord’s Day, let alone to bully others into doing so! And let it be known that this is no better or worse, in the Lord’s eyes, than to sell illicit drugs and to force others to do so.
What our community ought to be seeking in these difficult times is the blessing of God Almighty on our families, not the blessing of “big brother”. May God have mercy on us!
Yours faithfully
Trevor Sullivan
