What does The Bible say about – MURDER?”

SCRIPTURE: COMMENT:

Exodus 20:13 - “Thou shalt not kill ...” This sixth of the Ten Commandments is to be understood as a prohibition against murder, not all kinds of killing. As we have previously shown, the Ten Commandments are a moral code given for the regulation of the behaviour of both individuals and nations.

Genesis 9:6 - “Whoso shedeth man’s God avenges murder.

blood, by man shall his blood be shed:”

Romans 13:4 - “rulers .. he beareth not God appoints civil rulers to avenge with the

the sword in vain: for he is the minister sword where appropriate. This is not murder

of God ... to execute wrath upon him that but justice. Such justice solemnly brings the

doeth evil.” criminal face to face with his Maker. Such justice, if administered properly, brings the fear of God upon a community.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 - “To everything there Not all war is murder. In this imperfect world

is a season ... a time of war ...” war has its place.

2 Samuel 5:19 - “.. David inquired of the War must be considered prayerfully and in

Lord .. Shall I go up to the Philistines? submission to the will of God.

wilt thou deliver them into mine hand?

.. the Lord said, Go up: for I will doubtless

deliver the Philistines into thine hand.”

2 Samuel 21:1 - “ .. famine three years .. War waged outside God’s will is murder and

David inquired of the Lord .. It is for Saul will be avenged. Similarly, all unlawful killing

.. because he slew the Gibeonites.” e.g. abortion, euthansia, suicide.

Lord be merciful! Spare us and keep us from “presumptuous sin”!
