Dear Sir

Would you kindly consider the following for your “Letters” column:

Alexander Downer’s comment, aired on last night’s news, to the effect that Australian’s should stop “abusing” Indonesians over the Schapelle Corby case, is an insult to all Australian citizens!

I haven’t heard of a single case of anyone abusing any Indonesian, and I’m convinced that Mr Downer’s propaganda is a slander against innocent Australians. On the other hand, it is fair to say that it is Schapelle Corby who is being abused by the Indonesian authorities. And clearly Mr Downer doesn’t want Australians to exercise their right of free speech in saying so! He has apparently not learned the lesson that bowing down and licking people’s boots does not win their respect, whether they are friend or foe.

I don’t want to advocate angry and violent reaction. The Bible says, “Be angry and sin not.” To be angry over wickedness and injustice is not sin. God Himself is “angry with the wicked every day.” But God forbid that Canberra’s control freaks should challenge our freedom of speech!

I don’t wish any harm to poor Indonesians who have no control over their corrupt authorities. We Australians have the same trouble with our corrupt authorities. (If in doubt, ask Lindy Chamberlain and Pauline Hanson!) But cowardice is not the answer. If Indonesia suffers from an Australian boycott, let it be remembered that it is Indonesia, not Australia, which is to blame! And let it be Indonesia, not Australia, which has to deal with its own corruption! It might just improve Indonesia in the long run, just as boycotting Qantas might improve its standards also.

Yours faithfully

Trevor Sullivan
